Hedgehog

Hedgehog

  • Scientific name:
    Erinaceinae

The hedgehogs are small and have a body covered with spines (their main feature), which they use to defend themselves against predators.

They also use their coverage to cushion possible falls. These quills are actually hair full of keratin that gives them rigidity and are not sharp, contrary to what we usually believe. The animal that has the sharp prongs is the porcupine and we should not confuse them with these. Hedgehogs only lose their quills when they are small (to replace them with those of adults) and when they are stressed or sick. In addition, they have long nails on the hind legs to dig.

These animals usually sniff at all hours and move the nose in a peculiar way (from side to side), which ends in a point. They have a very developed touch and ear.

They are nocturnal animals like hamsters, so they sleep during the day and are active at night. They are also solitary creatures and in the wild they only meet to mate.

Hedgehogs are insectivorous animals, so their diet is mainly based on insects.

Hedgehogs usually measure between 13 and 30 centimeters long and have a plump body.
